New Direction

The blog has been on pause for a while as I have been studying. I was recommended to investigate the Essential School of Painting by a fellow exhibitor at the Royal Academy Summer Show in 2023 and it has turned out to be a really positive move. Last September I joined one of their Studio Painting courses, working for one day a week with practicing artist/ tutors Guy Allott and Rosanna Dean.

I am now using oils on canvas and painting at a much larger scale. The bigger movements required to explain the contours of figure and cloth are suiting my body as well as my work. Rosanna studied old master painting techniques in Florence, and I am eager to incorporate some of these into my practice. Working in oils is exciting, and there is so much to learn, including glazing, creating colour and depth by the application of oil paint in very thin layers. I am also learning more about the subtleties of light, shade and colour temperature, allowing me to create much more sophisticated palettes.

Here is a shot with me and a new oil painting entitled Cumulo-Peacock…

UPCOMING SHOW

I have a London end of year show with The Essential School of Painting in June 25th to 29th so if you put that in your diaries, I’ll let you know more details in due course, including when I’ll be there to meet you.

I have recently had a major web site update. I’ve expanded the WORKS section to give an overview of my development in painting over the last 5 years, and added new items to the SHOP.

Let me know if you’d like to see any of the new works in person, prior to the show.

Have a great week
